No one was watching the clock
Twenty laps into a Texas afternoon, the fastest one of the day went by without a single person noticing. The phone in his pocket noticed.
The thing about a verified lap is that it does not need a witness.
He came through the esses in fourth, carried more speed than the lap before, and by the time the timing gate did its arithmetic he was already braking for eleven. No grandstand. No flag. Just a number that would be true tomorrow and true next season.
That is the whole argument for the record book. Not that anyone was there. That the ground itself was.
